Minimum Wage: Delta Gov Opens Talks with NLC

The Delta State Government is taking steps to implement the new minimum wage.

Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, the State Commissioner for Information, revealed this on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 when briefing reporters following the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting.

According to him, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has entrusted the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, and the Commissioner for Finance, Chief Fidelis Tilije, to hold talks with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on the best modalities for implementation in the state.

Osuoza explained that the negotiations between the government and the organized labor would be centered on the necessary adjustments to the new wage.

According to the Commissioner, Governor Oborevwori expressed his disappointment with the current hardship in the country and urged the Commissioner for Agriculture and the Chief Job Creation Officer to develop programmes that would mitigate the impact of the hardship, particularly on young people in the state.

During the briefing, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, the state commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine Roads), stated that the approvals support Governor Oborevwori’s meaningful development plans throughout the state, and 23 out of 25 local government areas are directly affected by the Exco’s new approvals.

The State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, discussed the approval for gully erosion sites to be reclaimed along the Okpanam-Ibusa bypass Road. According to him, the approval would allow the state government to sustain new roads by reclaiming areas affected by erosion.

Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, the Commissioner for Health, stated that the state Exco granted the purchase of two computerized tomography (CAT) scanners, each for the Central Hospital in Warri and the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara, during the post-Exco briefing.

The approval for the purchase of medical equipment was significant because it is used for diagnosis of diseases and internal injuries in the health care delivery sector, according to Dr. Onojaeme. Additionally, Dr. Onojaeme stated that the CT scan is beneficial for all Deltans.

According to him, the Ministry of Health had got approval to renovate over 150 primary health centres (PHCs) across the state because of its importance in the health care delivery system, saying “if Primary Health care facilities are properly taken care of, more then 80 per cent of health challenges would have been addressed.”

The Commissioner equally said the State Exco also approved the payment of N3.55bn as counterpart funding for the 2024 Universal Basic Education Programme in the state.

According to him, the Exco has given approval for the appointment of Obi Sunday Ubaka Ogboli as the Obi of Issele-Mkpitime in the Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state.
