Pedro Neto's first Premier League (PL) goal for Chelsea secured a 1-1 draw against London rivals Arsenal, extending the Gunners' winless streak in the league to four matches.
Heading into the game, the two teams were separated by only goal difference in the league standings, and the first half reflected the close nature of their competition. Neither side was able to assert prolonged dominance, with both having promising moments but lacking consistency.
Cole Palmer's early speculative shot forced Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya into action, while Chelsea's Malo Gusto squandered the best chance of the first half, heading Neto’s cross over the bar from inside the six-yard box.
Arsenal's most dangerous opportunity came when Gabriel Martinelli found space in the box, but his weak effort was easily gathered by Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez. Moments later, a quick free-kick from Declan Rice played in former Chelsea forward Kai Havertz, who finished confidently, only for the goal to be ruled out for a tight offside decision.
The second half began somewhat flatly, but a dangerous cross from Noni Madueke soon sparked some excitement. Wesley Fofana's volley, however, flew over the bar as he stretched to connect with the ball.
Despite the lack of clear chances, the deadlock was finally broken in the 60th minute. Martin Ødegaard, returning to Premier League action, found Martinelli, who kept his composure to score at Sanchez’s near post and put Arsenal ahead.
However, Chelsea quickly leveled the score as Pedro Neto cut inside and fired a low shot past David Raya's outstretched hand just 10 minutes later.
The match saw few further clear-cut chances in the closing stages. Nicolas Jackson had a goal ruled out for offside, while a similar offside decision at the other end saw Robert Sánchez make a sharp save that proved to be inconsequential.
Chelsea’s quest for a first head-to-head win over Arsenal since August 2021 remains unfulfilled, but the draw keeps them in third place in the Premier League, with just one loss in their last 10 league matches (W5, D4).
As for Arsenal, their title hopes have been dealt a blow. They now sit nine points behind league leaders Liverpool, are level with Chelsea on goal difference, and have not won an away league match since mid-September.
