Police detectives in Ondo State have arrested a 34-year-old man, Monday Chukwu, for allegedly stabbing his friend, Kefa Ofando, to death over a N2,000 debt in the Odigbo council area of the state. The tragic event occurred on September 20, 2024, during an argument over the debt.
Parading the suspect alongside 10 other criminals, the state police commissioner, Abayomi Oladipo, disclosed the details of the heinous crime. According to the police chief, Monday Chukwu, a resident of Akintola village, stabbed 30-year-old Kefa Ofando in the neck with a pair of scissors during a heated argument. The confrontation reportedly began after Ofando demanded repayment of the N2,000 he had lent to the suspect. Tragically, Ofando succumbed to his injuries, and police recovered the murder weapon at the scene. A medical practitioner confirmed the victim’s death shortly after the stabbing.
A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya said,
“Discrete investigation revealed that the deceased had borrowed the suspect the sum of two thousand Naira, which, when demanded a few days later, led to an argument during which the suspect stabbed the victim with scissors on his neck.
“Upon arrival at the scene, crime scene experts recovered a pair of scissors, while a medical practitioner confirmed Kefa Ofando dead.
Furthermore, the suspect is currently in custody, and the police commissioner emphasized the need for restraint during disputes, particularly those involving money. He warned the public to avoid confrontations with violent individuals and stressed that self-control is vital when under pressure.
"Investigation is ongoing, and the suspect will soon be charged to court upon conclusion.
“However, this underscores the importance of staying away from violent individuals and the need to act with restraint, especially when angry or under pressure.“
Also, In a separate gruesome crime, a 16-year-old girl, Precious Kolawole, has been arrested for the brutal murder of a popular caterer, Mrs. Adeniyi Iyabode, the CEO of Bola Country Kitchen in Ondo State. Precious, a secondary school student, was one of the victim's domestic staff. Alongside two accomplices, including 17-year-old Emmanuel Philip, Precious allegedly plotted and executed the murder just days after Mrs. Iyabode's birthday celebration.
Sadly, the suspects reportedly killed the caterer after overhearing her talk about receiving a substantial amount of money. After the murder, the duo withdrew N30,000 from the victim’s account using her ATM card. Police investigations revealed that Precious inflicted machete wounds on the victim, while Emmanuel stabbed her with a knife.
Both suspects are currently in police custody and will be charged in court upon the conclusion of the investigation. Commissioner Oladipo urged the public to be cautious when discussing personal finances, especially in the presence of domestic staff, and to prioritize their safety by taking preventive measures like installing CCTV cameras in their workplaces.
