Newspaper Publishers set to Elect New Executive In Imo

Members of the Imo Newspaper Publishers Association, INPA are scheduled to exercise their franchise on Saturday, September 14, 2024 to elect a new executive to pilot their affairs for the next three years.

The polls will hold at the Old English Bar & Grill located on Item Street, Owerri, the Imo state capital.

All the positions in the Executive Committee of the association are up for grabs.

They are Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer and Financial Secretary.

Others are Public Relations Officers and Provost.

A delegate from each of 18 member-organizations will be voting during the polls.

The member-organizations are Eastern Lead Express, National Newsbreak, Nigeria Newsguide, National Newsblast, City Star, Star Post, Newsday, Hero, Trumpeta and White Paper.

Others are The Big Truth, Lush, First Citizen, Spartan, Eastern News, Union Mail, Daily Brief and Nigeria Moment.

The Electoral Committee headed by Gele Agbai, Publisher of National Newsbreak Newspaper had on Monday, September 9 released the list of contestants for the various positions.

In a statement signed by the Secretary, Comrade Stanley Duruanyim, the Electoral Committee disclosed that the incumbent Chairman and Publisher of Eastern Lead Express, Chief Declan Anaele is seeking a second term.

The statement added that Anaele is being challenged by Mr. Chidi Emeagi, Publisher of Nigeria Newsguide Newspaper.

Emeagi was a factional chairman of the association during the era of Apostle Lambert Ojukwu when the association was polarized into two.

Interestingly, most of the other positions except the position of Public Relations Officer (PRO) which is being contested for by the duo of Salvator Amadi, Publisher of National Newsblast and Ejike Ogbonna, Publisher of First Citizen have single contestants.

They are the positions of Vice Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and Financial Secretary.

Agbai explained that in a situation where a position has only one contestant, members will still be required to vote for and against for the contestant to determine his suitability for the position.

According to Agbai, the polls which will be by open-secret balloting will be won and lost by simple majority.

He charged members particularly the contestants to conduct their campaigns and themselves before, during and after the polls with decorum.

The Chairman assured of the readiness of the Electoral Committee to conduct transparent and credible elections.
