TikTok Removes 2.1 Million Violating Videos in Nigeria

 TikTok, the popular short-form video Social Media platform, has announced the removal of over 2.1 million videos in Nigeria for violating its community guidelines during the second quarter of 2024.


According to the company's Community Guidelines Enforcement Report, released on Tuesday, the removed videos represent less than 1% of total uploads in Nigeria during the reporting period.


TikTok attributed its success in proactive detection to advanced technologies, stating that 99.1% of the deleted videos were taken down before users reported them. 


Additionally, 90.7% of the violating content was removed within 24 hours.


Globally, TikTok removed over 178 million videos in June 2024, with 144 million detected and removed through automated systems. The company boasted a proactive detection rate of 98.2% worldwide.


"TikTok is committed to providing a safe and secure platform for our users in Nigeria and around the world," said a company spokesperson. "We will continue to invest in cutting-edge technologies to stay ahead of harmful content."


The move is part of TikTok's ongoing efforts to enhance content moderation and transparency, addressing concerns over harmful content and user safety.


“Key findings show that 99.1 per cent of these videos were proactively removed before users reported them, with 90.7 per cent taken down within 24 hours. These figures highlight TikTok’s commitment to staying ahead of harmful content, ensuring a safer platform for Nigerian users,” the report noted.
