President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the takeover and conversion of Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, Lafia, to Federal University Teaching Hospital, Lafia, following a request by the Nasarawa State Government.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale made this known in a Statement on Wednesday, 21 August, 2024.
The president buttressed that the conversion of the health facility to a federal teaching hospital will boost healthcare delivery and enhance the training of students in medical and allied sciences as well as boost healthcare delivery in the state.
The statement reiterated President Tinubu's commitment to ensuring the social welfare and healthcare security of Nigerians and aggressively sustain his administration's investment drive and efforts in the sector.
It was gathered that the idea of constructing a specialist hospital that would later be named DASH was conceived in 1996 after the creation of Nasarawa state.
The Federal University, Lafia, was established in 2010 under the Goodluck Jonathan administration. The university commenced academic activities in September 2012 with Ekanem Ikpi Braide as its first vice-chancellor.
The University currently has over 26 departments .The National Universities Commission (NUC), in 2020, approved medicine and surgery as one of the programmes at FULafia.
In a related development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has also approved the reappointment of Professor Abdurrahman Abba Sheshe as the Chief Medical Director of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, for a second and final term of four years.
Tinubu also reappointed Prof. Yusuf Bara as Chief Medical Director of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, for a second and final term of four years.
Professor Sheshe was first appointed as the Chief Medical Director of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in December 6, 2019.
According to the statement, the President expects that with the renewal of Professor Sheshe's appointment, he will re-dedicate himself to improving the standards of the hospital and ensuring the efficient delivery of qualitative services to citizens.
