Two Nigerian airports Win ACI  Africa Safety Awards

Two Nigerian International airports have bagged separate awards in the just concluded ACI Africa Airport Safety Awards.


The Airport Council International recognised the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja and the Port Harcourt International Airport in Nigeria. for their exceptional dedication to airport emergency management and resilience.


The Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, Tunde Moshood, in a statement on Friday, 20 September 2024, during the Gala Night at the 33rd Annual General Assembly of ACI Africa in Johannesburg, South Africa, said both airports were honoured with plaques.


The awards were presented by the ACI Africa Secretary-General, Ali Tounsi, and the President, of ACI Africa, Emmanuel Chaves.


The Statement noted that the awards were a testament to the unwavering commitment and hard work of everyone.

“These prestigious awards are a testament to the unwavering commitment and hard work of everyone involved in ensuring excellence in airport emergency management and resilience, especially the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo.

“Nigeria’s aviation sector can take pride in this achievement, which underscores the dedication to providing secure and efficient travel experiences,” the statement read.


ACI Africa Airport Safety Award shows the commitment to the continuous improvement of safety on the African continent as well as a recognition of the best African airports in terms of airport safety, which is considered as main pillar of the air transport industry.


The 2024 ACI Africa Airport Safety Award, under the theme “Excellence in Airport Emergency Management and Resilience”, focused on the measures to be taken by an airport operator as well as other internal and external stakeholders to ensure optimal coordination of activities that could help deal with emergencies while ensuring resilience to return to normal swiftly.


The main objective of the ACI Africa Airport Safety Award 2024 as indicated on the ACI’s Website is to identify member airports of the association that practice excellence in emergency management and airport resilience, based on an assessment of manuals, procedures, and concrete and functional measures in the context of planning, preparation, intervention, and resilience in airport emergencies.

 Particular attention is also given to the means put in place to have all these measures adopted, implemented, and applied.
