UNIBEN Students Trapped as Building Collapses in Edo

Ekosodin, a community housing several University of Benin Students Were thrown into panic on Saturday morning when a storey building on Ekhator Street, Benin, the Edo State capital, collapsed during the early morning downpour in the state.

Ekosodin is a neighborhood that shares a border with the University of Benin and has a large student population.

Due to limited accommodation options within the university, many students who are unable to secure housing on campus choose to reside in the area making it a popular off-campus housing destination.

Residents of the area said no death was recorded adding that some of the trapped students have been rescued while the search for others continue.

One of the students who pleaded anonymity said that the university rescue team managed to evacuate some of the trapped occupants, though several were severely injured.

"The rescue team is still searching for one of the victims who remains trapped inside the rubble, called from inside and the rescue team has continued its search to locate and rescue her and others who are still trapped,” the student said.

She added that the injured victims were rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.

As at the time of filing this report, the University management is yet to officially react to the incident.

However, it was learnt that the University's Dean of Student Affairs was at the scene, coordinating rescue efforts alongside the university team.

The incident occurred just at the time the University students are taking their exams.
