Vandals Destroy Damaturu-Maiduguri Line Electricity Towers

Vandals have yet again destroyed electricity towers on Damaturu-Maiduguri.

Information gathered indicates another act of vandalism on the electricity infrastructure along the Damaturu-Maiduguri line.

The incident which happened on Sunday, 22 September, 2024 makes it the third occasion such attack is happening on the electricity towers in the area.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed the latest vandalism of its infrastructure, following previous similar incidents. In July 2024, TCN announced that vandals destroyed two towers along the Damaturu-Maiduguri line.

TCN's General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, issued a press statement confirming the recent incident.

“The Transmission Company of Nigeria hereby states that two of its towers, T193 and T194, along the Damaturu-Maiduguri 330kV Single Circuit Transmission Line have again been destroyed by vandals,” Mbah said.

Similarly, Bayelsa State and some parts of Rivers State was plunged into darknes since July 27, 2024 as a result of vandals.

The two transmission towers along the Owerri-Ahoada-Yenagoa 132KV Double Circuit Transmission Lines were vandalized on July 27, 2024.

Also, on Monday, August 12, the vandals further destroyed a 13 transmission towers along the same Owerri-Ahoada-Yenagoa line.

Reacting to the destruction of additional 13 towers, which was first reported by the Youth President of the Ukpeli Community in Rivers State on August 12, 2024, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of TCN, Mr Sule Abdulaziz said it was a "national disaster", stressing that the destruction of its installations has become "increasingly alarming and overwhelming".

It is through this transmission line that power is evacuated to supply electricity to the entire Bayelsa State.

Two transmission towers, T98 and T99, along the Ahoada/Yenagoa 132kV line in the Igbooghene community of the state, were destroyed by vandals according to the Transmission Company of Nigeria.

Since then, Yenagoa and its environs, which depends on the national grid, had been cut off from power supply for over two months causing gross darkness.

According to the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Power, Engr. Kharin Akari Komuko, who frowned at the high level of destruction serious work is going on there amd with time the state would be brought to normalcy.

Hr said " We are working with all the relevant authorities to fix the problem. We are optimistic that as soon as possible power will be restored to the state.
