Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen has provided an explanation for his decision to withdraw the Counter Subversion Bill and related bills that were introduced on July 23.
The speaker also addressed the widespread concerns raised by Nigerians regarding the proposed legislation, which included penalties of up to 10 years in prison for certain actions.
He explained that this decision was made after extensive consultations with various stakeholders and a careful evaluation of the nation’s current circumstances.
Tajudeen reiterated his commitment to prioritizing the interests of the people, emphasizing that he has always valued listening to citizens and fostering unity within the country.
He assured the public that the House of Representatives remains dedicated to being a true representative body for the people.
Acknowledging the significance of the concerns raised, Tajudeen reiterated his commitment to never supporting any action that could disrupt the peace and unity of the nation.
He expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their active engagement and interest in the legislative process.
The Counter Subversion Bill, 2024 (HB. 1652), originally introduced on July 23 and sponsored by Speaker Tajudeen, was intended to enhance Nigeria's national security.
The Speaker assured Nigerians that the bill was comprehensive and not targeted at any particular group or section of the country.
Tajudeen stated that citizens were encouraged to express their opinions on the bill, either in person or through written submissions, with their input being considered in the committee’s report to be presented on the House floor.
Tajudeen also explained that his priority is to champion the people's interests and that he has always put listening to citizens and fostering unity at the top of his agenda.
The speaker said that he has decided to keep demonstrating his commitment to ensuring that the House remains truly the People's House.

The now-withdrawn bill was aligned with Nigeria's anti-terrorism framework and aimed to address subversive activities by associations, cults, organizations, militias, bandits, and other prohibited groups within the country.
