The Honourable Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy in Bayelsa State, Dr. Mrs. Faith Izibenua Zibs-Godwin, has embarked on a significant inspection tour to assess key facilities critical to the revival of the state’s marine economy.
The tour, conducted on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, reflects the government’s commitment to leveraging its marine resources to drive economic growth and sustainability.
Dr. Mrs Faith , accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Engr. Jonjon Olali Samuel, and a team of senior officials, began the tour with a visit to the abandoned jetty in Ogbia Local Government Area. Once a bustling hub for fish trawlers, the jetty served as a vital point for berthing and offloading fish.
However, years of neglect have rendered the facility non-operational, stifling opportunities in the fishing industry.
During her visit, the commissioner emphasized the jetty’s potential to revive Bayelsa’s fishing industry, create jobs, and stimulate economic activity. "This jetty holds immense promise for our local fisheries and the marine economy as a whole. Its revitalization will bring back the vibrancy of the fishing industry and open doors for economic empowerment,” Dr. Zibs-Godwin remarked.
The inspection team also visited the Oxbow Lake Pavilion and Boat Club, a site identified for its potential to drive marine-based recreation and tourism. Joined by senior officials, including Mr. Wakedei Davidson Ere, Engr. Saiyou Kenisuomein, Dr. Happy Pere-Omodu, and her press team, the commissioner explored ways to transform the facility into a thriving hub for leisure, tourism, and social gatherings.
“The Oxbow Lake Pavilion is a gem that can boost tourism and enhance the recreational appeal of Bayelsa. Developing it aligns with our vision of a sustainable and vibrant marine economy,” she stated.
These visits are part of Bayelsa’s broader strategy to unlock its vast marine potential. The government aims to restore abandoned infrastructure, promote sustainable livelihoods, and foster economic growth in the state.
The Commissioner reaffirmed her ministry’s dedication to delivering results that would benefit the people of Bayelsa. She assured stakeholders that detailed plans for these facilities would be unveiled in the coming months as part of ongoing efforts to revitalize the marine and blue economy.
