Veteran Nollywood actress Bukky Wright has shared the reason behind her extended break from the movie industry. In an interview today, she revealed that her decision was influenced by her commitment to her children.
According to Wright, motherhood requires being present, especially during critical moments in a child’s life. She explained that she stepped away from acting to focus on raising her children, who were living abroad at the time.
“I didn’t step away because I lost interest in acting or because I had achieved everything I wanted in the industry. There’s still so much I hope to do, But at that point in my life, my children needed me, and as a mother, I had to prioritize them,” she said.
She further emphasized the challenges of raising children overseas, stating that leaving them in the care of others was not an option. “There comes a stage where children need their mother more than ever. If you’re not there, they’ll remind you by saying things like, ‘You’re not my mum, you can’t tell me what to do,’ she explained. That’s why I had to be there myself.”
Wright also highlighted the sacrifices mothers often make, comparing it to the cultural practice of “Omugwo” a tradition where mothers care for their daughters after childbirth. She noted that men rarely take on such responsibilities.
”Mothers will always be mothers. I’m not saying fathers don’t play their roles, but in Yoruba culture, there’s a saying; Iya ni iya mi, Baba ni baba gbogbo aye” which means, A mother is a mother, but a father can be a father to many.”
Now that her children are grown, Wright is ready to return to acting, eager to take on new projects and continue her career in Nollywood.
