In a significant event marking a new chapter in the history of the Oyo Kingdom, Governor Seyi Makinde has officially presented the Staff of Office to the newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade.
The historic ceremony took place on Monday, January 13, 2024, at the Governor’s office in Ibadan, Oyo State’s capital.
This momentous occasion comes nearly three years after the passing of Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, the former Alaafin, who reigned for over five decades before his death on April 22, 2022.
The vacancy left in the royal stool had sparked much debate, both within the Oyo Kingdom and beyond, as stakeholders deliberated on a worthy successor.
Governor Makinde’s announcement of Oba Owoade’s selection last week sparked a mix of excitement and controversy, as discussions about the process of selection unfolded.
However, the governor emphasized the importance of unity and progress, urging the people of Oyo State to rally around the new monarch.
The choice of Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade was affirmed by the Oyomesi (the traditional kingmakers of Oyo), after extensive consultations and divinations.
Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, noted during the announcement that the decision had been made with careful consideration to uphold the cultural and spiritual traditions of the kingdom.
“This proclamation brings to an end the long-standing social and legal disputes that have surrounded the selection process since the passing of the last Alaafin,” Oyelade stated. He further called on citizens of Oyo State to celebrate the occasion as a milestone in the preservation of their cultural heritage.
The Staff of Office, a symbol of authority and leadership, was handed over to Oba Owoade amidst a ceremonial gathering of dignitaries, government officials, and traditional leaders. Governor Makinde reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to respecting and promoting traditional institutions as vital pillars of governance and community development.
Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade now steps into a revered position steeped in history and cultural significance, tasked with steering the Oyo Kingdom into a new era. The governor encouraged the new Alaafin to prioritize unity and inclusivity, serving as a bridge between the throne and the people.
With the presentation of the Staff of Office, the Oyo Kingdom embarks on a new chapter under the leadership of Oba Owoade. Citizens and leaders alike expressed optimism for peace, progress, and continuity under the reign of the new monarch.
