The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has dismissed allegations stating that it sells substandard petrol with a high burn rate.
In a statement on Saturday February 15, 2025, the company’s spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, addressed a viral video claiming that NNPCL’s petrol burns faster than expected.
The controversy began when a content creator posted a video online comparing petrol purchased from Dangote and NNPC filling stations. He claimed to have bought one litre of Dangote petrol at an MRS station in Alapere, Lagos, for ₦925 and the same quantity at an NNPC station in Ojodu Berger for ₦945. According to him, when he used both fuels in separate power generators, the one running on NNPC fuel stopped after 17 minutes, while the Dangote petrol lasted 33 minutes.
However, NNPCL refuted the claim, stating that the fuel sold at its stations, including the one in question, was actually sourced from the Dangote refinery.
“The NNPC Ltd strongly refutes the false and misleading allegations made in a viral video circulating online, which claims that NNPC fuel does not last,” the statement read.
“This assertion is baseless and entirely unfounded, originating from unverified and amateur research that lacks credibility, accuracy, and professional oversight.”
The company assured the public that its petrol is formulated to meet high industry standards, ensuring efficiency, durability, and environmental sustainability.
NNPCL further clarified that a significant portion of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) sold at its retail stations in Lagos, including the one referenced in the video, is sourced from the Dangote refinery.
“It is important to emphasise that a significant percentage of Premium Motor Spirit sold at NNPC retail stations in Lagos, where this deceptive video was created, is sourced from the Dangote Refinery, a strategic partner in promoting local production and energy security,” the statement read.
NNPCL reaffirmed that Dangote Refinery follows strict industry standards, ensuring that all petroleum products meet the required specifications for consumers.
The company also described the video as a deliberate attempt to misinform the public and damage its reputation.
“This misleading video is yet another desperate attempt by economic saboteurs to mislead Nigerians and tarnish NNPC’s reputation,” it stated.
NNPCL warned that it would no longer tolerate the spread of false information aimed at undermining its operations.
“Henceforth, NNPC Ltd will take firm legal action against individuals or groups who intentionally spread falsehoods about our brand and operations. Those engaged in such malicious activities will be held fully accountable under the law,” the statement warned.
The company urged Nigerians to disregard such misleading content and instead rely on credible sources for accurate information. It reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the availability, affordability, and quality of fuel while adhering to global industry standards.
