The 1999 Alumni Association of the Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences (OACHS) at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) has set a new standard for alumni contributions, leaving a lasting impact on their alma mater. In a grand 25th-anniversary gesture, this group of alumni returned to OOU, Ogun State, with a remarkable gift for future generations. The association celebrated its milestone by fully renovating the university’s Glass House lecture hall and donating teaching aids worth approximately N22 million, creating an enhanced and modern learning environment for students and faculty.
The revitalized Glass House, now officially reopened, is the first alumni-sponsored project of its kind in OOU’s history. During the commissioning ceremony, OOU’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Agboola, praised the alumni’s generosity and vision, lauding their commitment to transforming the educational landscape. “This renovation and donation are unparalleled acts by any alumni association in our institution,” Agboola said, urging other alumni sets to follow this outstanding example.
This ambitious project was led by Dr. John Akinola, Chairman of the OACHS 1999 Alumni Board of Trustees, who shared the details of the extensive work undertaken to renovate the lecture hall. The overhaul included the installation of new ceilings, lighting, and electrical fittings, along with brand-new benches and tables. Windowpanes were replaced, and the entire hall was repainted, creating a bright and inviting space that reflects the alumni’s dedication to providing a conducive learning atmosphere. The group’s contribution also extended beyond the building itself, as they equipped the hall with a public address system, high-definition projector, and whiteboards, ensuring students and faculty have access to modern teaching tools that enhance the educational experience.
The significance of this project goes beyond its monetary value, underscoring the alumni’s continued commitment to supporting healthcare education and improving campus facilities. In recent years, the OACHS 1999 alumni have made several notable contributions to OOU’s educational and medical institutions. In 2023, the alumni association donated essential supplies, including bedsheets, to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH). This follows an earlier donation by Dr. Muyiwa Abdul, a 1999 alumnus who financed the construction of a new pediatric ward for OOUTH in 2022. These contributions reveal the alumni’s holistic approach to enhancing both educational and healthcare environments for students and patients alike.
Reflecting on the impact of their efforts, the alumni association stated, “The renovated Glass House is not merely a structure; it is a symbol of our commitment to enhancing the learning environment in pursuit of excellence in health sciences.” This gesture, they emphasized, aligns with their mission to uplift the standards of education and healthcare within Nigeria.
