Tinubu Calls For Free Fair & Credible Guber Election In Edo

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on all stakeholders in the upcoming Edo State governorship elections to conduct themselves peacefully and sportingly, scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2024.

The President implored the governorship candidates, political parties, and supporters to respect the democratic process and the people’s will.

A statement by his Special Adviser, Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said that President Tinubu believes in the voter’s ability to make informed decisions about their future leaders.

He emphasized that democracy thrives on civility, tolerance, patience, and respect for the rules of the game noting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is committed to conducting a free and fair election, urging all stakeholders to work together to ensure a successful and peaceful process.

“I commend the governorship candidates and political parties for their campaigns, which have focused on issues that matter most to the people of Edo State, including improving livelihoods, promoting economic growth, and contributing to national development’’.

“All citizens in the state should remain peaceful and respectful throughout the voting process. Resolve any disagreements amicably through the constituted authorities’’.

President Tinubu also expresses unwavering confidence in the professionalism and integrity of security agencies and INEC officials. He urges them to remain impartial and avoid any actions that could compromise the integrity of the electoral process.

Niger Delta Connect had earlier reported that Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State expressed concern about the safety of Nigeria’s democracy and the troubling happenings that has been going on lately in the state.

Governor Obaseki highlighted that a former governor of Edo State, who no longer holds office, seems to have more security than a current sitting governor.

He mentioned that this ex-governor’s house is guarded by more security personnel and even two Armored personnel Carrier vehicles (APC), which are meant for heavy security operations. Obaseki also raised concerns about the former governor, campaigning for an opposition party, and using police helicopters for his political activities.

Additionally, the governor claimed that police officers in the state are being used to intimidate political opponents. He warned that these unfair practices could hurt the election process and the country’s future.

One Pedro Obaseki, a lecturer and member of the PDP in Edo State recently shared his experience while passing through the area around former Governor Adams Oshiomhole's house in Benin City.

In a recent video shared, Obaseki described seeing a heavy police presence in the Okoro Otun area, where Oshiomhole's home is located. He said he saw two armored tanks stationed on either side of the house, along with about 30 police vehicles. Thereby creating a tensed atmosphere. This heavy police presence has led to road blockages, causing traffic delays for many, including Obaseki himself.
